Two pairs of boot soles

Image
There's lithops news from home. :) Looks like the big guys previously featured here , here and here have all gone two-headed this year. I'm sure you can understand how anxious I am to finally see them 'in person'. It's a pretty exciting moment in a lithops life (and a proud moment in a lithops owner's life, haha). I was going to show you my recent purchases but it's difficult to take good pictures in my current flat, not enough light, and I'd rather avoid flash that makes them look unnatural. So, for now, I'll post two older pictures of two aucampiae that look like two boot soles. These plants share their pot with this gesinae . Maybe it's superstitious but I'm convinced that lithops tend to grow faster and look healthier if planted in groups of at least two plants. (They also tend to rot if there are too many so there's surely a line there.) I'm very happy with how they've turned out. Love it when lithops are flat and near to ...

From out of space

I've never seen such a color of a lithops plant! Okay, I've never had a Lithops v. gesinae C207 till now either. Is it normal or was it watered with manganese solution? :) I wonder if the new pairs of leaves will keep the color. I'd sure love that.

EXPO pics

Without much of an introduction, here come the lithops pictures from the Tokyo Succulent Fair 2010. I will post photos of the guys I bought soon as well :)

Succulent EXPO in Tokyo

Image
(click for XXL) I'm finally back! Well, back in Nara. :) This were two exhausting weeks: first the internship in Fukushima, then, without even coming home, a trip to Tokyo. I'm so tired I could sleep for a week but since I've managed to catch a cold on the last day sleeping is a bit difficult. Anyway... I've got something to tell! I haven't planned it at all (couldn't find any info online) but I could visit this year's Tokyo Cactus and Succulent Fair ! I went to the shop that is known to sell lithops once in a while (Station Ikebukuro, SEIBU building, 9th floor which is the roof). After actually finding a whole shop counter full of lithops and getting myself several plants I was told at the checkout that the Expo starts 20.03 and will be held exactly at this shop. So I went again 20.03 and could make a great lot of pictures: lithops, haworthiae, cacti etc. My knowledge of cacti and other succulents is very limited so I just tried to get the whole store on S...

Five months in a lithops life

Image
Being away from the action I'm slowly running out of (relatively new) pictures to show so here are 5 from the year 2008 I've shot out of curiosity. People who see lithops for the first time often seem to think these plants take a long time to grow. I suppose, lithops fans know it to be wrong. :) I've been taking pictures of a hookeri mix pot throughout 5 months to see how they change, and it's quite amazing how they've managed to outgrow this large pot by far in such a short period of time! (I guess this would look more impressive if I made a .gif pic out of it. I'll do that as soon as I've more time.) Also, it's funny that these pictures were taken in summer and early fall - the period that is considered the resting period for lithops. Initially I intended to keep taking pictures of this pot for a whole year but I obviously miscalculated (or underrated the plants) so that they were squeezing each other out of the pot quite badly and had to be repotted s...

sunbeam on a flower

Image
Browsing through my picture folders I came across this photo I liked very much when I shot it. It's a ray of sunlight falling on the tip of a julii white flower bud making it shine. :)
